Splin­ter Soci­ety is a reg­is­tered archi­tec­ture prac­tice and mem­ber of the AIA. Our core ser­vice is address­ing the archi­tec­tur­al design for new builds, restora­tions and com­mer­cial spaces. Our expe­ri­ence includes large scale mul­ti-res­i­den­tial devel­op­ments and we have a spe­cial inter­est in engag­ing with indus­tri­al and old­er build­ings to inform our design decisions.

Our pri­ma­ry goal as a prac­tice is to cre­ate mem­o­rable envi­ron­ments and inter­ac­tions there­fore we are also a full-ser­vice inte­ri­or design prac­tice. We cre­ate cus­tom mate­ri­als and details for each of our projects and are reg­u­lar­ly involved in the cura­tion and fab­ri­ca­tion of fur­nish­ings. Light­ing design is also a par­tic­u­lar prac­tice spe­cial­i­sa­tion with exten­sive expe­ri­ence in archi­tec­tur­al, enter­tain­ment and spe­cial effect lighting.

Occa­sion­al­ly our projects will require us to work with clients and/​or sam­ple groups to obtain addi­tion­al infor­ma­tion, espe­cial­ly where the client and end user may be dif­fer­ent or the design impacts a broad­er com­mu­ni­ty. In the past we have done research to bet­ter under­stand real estate mar­kets for mul­ti-res projects, sci­en­tif­ic and patient research in insti­tu­tion­al set­tings, and fire safe­ty impli­ca­tion in at-risk communities.

The start­ing point for every job is devel­op­ing a clear brief to under­stand the spe­cif­ic needs of our clients and estab­lish the desired out­comes and pri­or­i­ties. When required, we are expe­ri­enced in run­ning work­shops, sur­veys and tar­get­ed inter­views to assist in devel­op­ing and refin­ing a brief. We believe that the suc­cess of a project is hinged on a prop­er­ly devel­oped and test­ed brief and we invest heav­i­ly in this process to ensure a high­ly rel­e­vant design out­come at the end of the process.

Every project has dif­fer­ent func­tions. Spa­tial­ly, we refer to this as the pro­gram. In Pro­gram­mat­ic Plan­ning we aim to fit your desired func­tions into the allo­cat­ed space, opti­mis­ing adja­cen­cies, mak­ing best use of assets and mit­i­gat­ing lim­i­ta­tions. We also see design and eco­nom­ic oppor­tu­ni­ties in evolv­ing and inject­ing new archi­tec­tur­al pro­grams and will pro­pose this where we see rel­e­vant to the indi­vid­ual project.

Through the process of design, we cre­ate a high­ly unique vision for your project which address­es the ele­ments of pro­gram and bud­get bring­ing it all togeth­er into a dis­tinct envi­ron­men­tal expe­ri­ence. This will con­sid­er con­fig­u­ra­tions that pro­mote moments of enjoy­ment, iden­ti­fy ideas for mate­ri­al­i­ty and begin to inte­grate unique details. In com­mer­cial projects this often includes a strong sense of spa­tial branding.

We see sus­tain­abil­i­ty as a fun­da­men­tal pil­lar of all design work, rather than an add on. We have exten­sive knowl­edge and expe­ri­ence in design­ing pas­sive solar spaces, a thor­ough knowl­edge of sus­tain­able ener­gy sys­tem options, and a large library of mate­ri­als which are sus­tain­abil­i­ty sourced and con­stant­ly being updat­ed. Sus­tain­abil­i­ty must be con­sid­ered from an envi­ron­men­tal per­spec­tive, but also form a social perspective.

Doc­u­men­ta­tion is a metic­u­lous process where­by we cre­ate the broad pic­ture of the project through plans and ele­va­tion­al draw­ings. Then we break down the build­ing into a series of detail draw­ings to explain to the builder each junc­tion to achieve the refined, bespoke design. We doc­u­ment all of our projects in house to ensure a con­sis­ten­cy of detail, res­o­lu­tion and qual­i­ty across our body of work.

At times it may be essen­tial to selec­tive­ly man­age design ideas with real­is­tic bud­get require­ments. Splin­ter Soci­ety will work with clients and builders to review options to cre­ate ben­e­fi­cial out­comes for both design and bud­get. With sev­er­al mem­bers of the office active­ly involved in con­struc­tion at var­i­ous scales, we have a sol­id foun­da­tion knowl­edge for how to design in a cost-effec­tive man­ner and tech­niques for achiev­ing design intent with­in a budget.

Our projects main­tain a high lev­el of detail­ing which requires col­lab­o­ra­tion through the build­ing process. Our team of archi­tects and design­ers pro­vide a pro­fes­sion­al and expe­ri­enced con­tract admin­is­tra­tion ser­vice to ensure the com­plet­ed build aligns with the design intent. We have a thor­ough knowl­edge of the con­tracts that we admin­is­ter and active­ly pur­sue pro­ces­sion­al devel­op­ment oppor­tu­ni­ties to ensure we are up to date with new con­tracts and code changes.
