Architecture
Splinter Society is a registered architecture practice and member of the AIA. Our core service is addressing the architectural design for new builds, restorations and commercial spaces. Our experience includes large scale multi-residential developments and we have a special interest in engaging with industrial and older buildings to inform our design decisions.
Interior Design
Our primary goal as a practice is to create memorable environments and interactions therefore we are also a full-service interior design practice. We create custom materials and details for each of our projects and are regularly involved in the curation and fabrication of furnishings. Lighting design is also a particular practice specialisation with extensive experience in architectural, entertainment and special effect lighting.
Research
Occasionally our projects will require us to work with clients and/or sample groups to obtain additional information, especially where the client and end user may be different or the design impacts a broader community. In the past we have done research to better understand real estate markets for multi-res projects, scientific and patient research in institutional settings, and fire safety implication in at-risk communities.
Brief Development
The starting point for every job is developing a clear brief to understand the specific needs of our clients and establish the desired outcomes and priorities. When required, we are experienced in running workshops, surveys and targeted interviews to assist in developing and refining a brief. We believe that the success of a project is hinged on a properly developed and tested brief and we invest heavily in this process to ensure a highly relevant design outcome at the end of the process.
Programmatic Planning
Every project has different functions. Spatially, we refer to this as the program. In Programmatic Planning we aim to fit your desired functions into the allocated space, optimising adjacencies, making best use of assets and mitigating limitations. We also see design and economic opportunities in evolving and injecting new architectural programs and will propose this where we see relevant to the individual project.
Design
Through the process of design, we create a highly unique vision for your project which addresses the elements of program and budget bringing it all together into a distinct environmental experience. This will consider configurations that promote moments of enjoyment, identify ideas for materiality and begin to integrate unique details. In commercial projects this often includes a strong sense of spatial branding.
Sustainability
We see sustainability as a fundamental pillar of all design work, rather than an add on. We have extensive knowledge and experience in designing passive solar spaces, a thorough knowledge of sustainable energy system options, and a large library of materials which are sustainability sourced and constantly being updated. Sustainability must be considered from an environmental perspective, but also form a social perspective.
Construction Documentation
Documentation is a meticulous process whereby we create the broad picture of the project through plans and elevational drawings. Then we break down the building into a series of detail drawings to explain to the builder each junction to achieve the refined, bespoke design. We document all of our projects in house to ensure a consistency of detail, resolution and quality across our body of work.
Value Engineering
At times it may be essential to selectively manage design ideas with realistic budget requirements. Splinter Society will work with clients and builders to review options to create beneficial outcomes for both design and budget. With several members of the office actively involved in construction at various scales, we have a solid foundation knowledge for how to design in a cost-effective manner and techniques for achieving design intent within a budget.
Contract Administration
Our projects maintain a high level of detailing which requires collaboration through the building process. Our team of architects and designers provide a professional and experienced contract administration service to ensure the completed build aligns with the design intent. We have a thorough knowledge of the contracts that we administer and actively pursue processional development opportunities to ensure we are up to date with new contracts and code changes.
