This office fit-out. for an advertising agency is housed in a
retrofitted plant room, on the 11th floor of a building in Collins
St, Melbourne.
The project began with extensive briefing to
establish internal and external working relationships and
business processes. The fit-out is split over two levels and is
a 'semi open plan' layout which works a fine balance of privacy
and access to light and services. With the 'creative teams'
tucked away on a mezzanine level, and the admin and
accounts staff on the main floor level, privacy is obtained
through the use of joinery and screening. Screens of black
coated PVC tubing and elastic thread in geometric displays
fill the spaces between desks, and create a means for services
to run to desks, avoiding unattractive bulky service ducts.
Triangular joinery are carefully positioned between the desks
of the 'creative' area, resulting in increased privacy when the
staff are at desks, in a seated position, and more clear lines of
sight when in standing position. These units act as both
storage and whiteboards.
The job called for a lot of on site assemble, particularly for the
screening and desk at the entry area. The plant structure, which is
made up of three segments of a Himalayan cedar log, had to be core
drilled, by a concrete core driller and huge dowels created, prior to
the on site re-construction of the log. It was then hung of a steel
structure and tied in place by the project engineer, and sailor, using
nautical rope knots.
The log and marble bench contain a number of plants that provide
screening to staff at the point of reception.
